2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Is Getting a Bigger Battery and a Rear Wiper

A comprehensive update for the EV crossover also includes revised styling, new features, and an N Line model with slightly sportier looks

After three model years on the market, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is receiving some significant updates that should arrive in the U.S. for the 2025 model year. Along with visual changes to the front and rear ends, the electric SUV gets a larger battery pack, a revised interior, and a new N Line model with sporty-looking touches inside and out. Hyundai revealed the Korea-spec version of the Ioniq 5 shown here, but we expect that these specs and features will mostly translate to the U.S.-spec car. The updated car goes on sale in Korea this month, and we think it will start to reach dealerships on our shores within the next several months. 

Bigger Battery, More Range

The current 10Best-winning Ioniq 5 has a battery pack with a 77.4-kWh capacity, and the new model expands that to 84.0 kWh. We're expecting that to extend range considerably. The rear-wheel-drive single-motor car is currently rated at 303 miles, and we expect that to go up to around 325 miles with the new battery; the all-wheel-drive dual-motor setup currently provides 260 miles of range, and that rating could go up to 280 miles. Hyundai did not mention the current car's Standard Range base model, which has a smaller 58.0-kWh battery pack. It's possible this model will disappear, but we'll have to wait to hear more about what's happening to this more affordable setup. 

Other Updates

New front and rear bumpers round out the major visual changes outside. They increase the car's length by 0.8 inch, and there are also new wheels and a reshaped rear spoiler. We're also excited about the addition of a windshield wiper for the rear window. We've missed this feature on our long-term Ioniq 5, as grime tends to build up back there with no way of clearing it easily.

There are a number of noticeable changes to the interior. The steering wheel is a new unit with the same pixel lights as the Ioniq 6, and the climate controls and infotainment buttons on the center stack are reorganized. There are new buttons for the heated seats and other controls on the center console, and the wireless phone charging pad is relocated to a more convenient spot. The rear seats now have a remote-folding function. Hyundai says there's new infotainment software, which it calls Connected Car Navigation Cockpit.

Under the skin, Hyundai said it retuned the shocks and added structural reinforcements. There's also more sound insulation that's meant to quell noise from the rear electric motor. Driver-assistance features including lane-keep assist and park assist are upgraded, and the steering wheel now has a hand-detection function.
